it at least applies to all tech in my experience, not just crypto. my earliest internet friends are from making tech review youtube vids 10 years ago. we all met during middle school and would travel to see each other during school breaks lol

I admit I found it weird until I found FC.

I went on a family trip to Europe when I was ~18.

Told my parents I'm going to meet a friend from my WoW guild, who at the time, I was spending 2-3 hours a day with. 

They thought I was insane, needless to say we had a great time and it was not the last time I met friends from vidya.

In the not too distant past I met highschool colleagues on mIRC first, before acknowledging them on school hallways. 

url → irl helps discover common interests, while plain irl is a bit akward at first, because of said unknown common interests

having said that, in time, I got better at both

Just seems the norm to me at this point. Been doing it since 2008. Started in Azeroth.
