So apparently Japan changed their money over the summer and I almost lost it at the ATM and had to stand there googling it like an idiot to make sure I wasn’t crazy. Top is new. I’m loving the wave on the back. Can’t wait to get more change and see what the other notes look like in person. Japan used to be very cash heavy, covid helped accelerate touch-less credit cards but most small businesses and temples are still cash. It’s strange because IC cards (electronic transit cards) are useable at most vending machines so I’m always caught off guard when I can’t pay with it and thrilled when I can unexpectedly. Now that I can reload my card with Apple Pay I rarely go to the ATM.

I had a couple old places tell me they didn’t accept the new notes that was annoying AF 😂 cuz all the machines gave me the new one

Woof! That happened to me with the stupid 500 yen coins not working on buses or vending machines. I spent those as soon as I got them! So annoying!
