this is meaningfully concerning. TikTok is a great platform for entertainment, and a terrible one for news. its capacity to cause harmful social contagions is unparalleled. vids have 3 secs to capture attention (10 words) with zero way to fact check content (unlike community notes), and the algo boosts controversy.

I see more political content on Twitter than TikTok bit a long shot I watch TikTok more than most on this app and never saw the Bin Laden thing - only saw it on Twitter People are overreacting IMO

Could it be that you interact less with political content and so the algo doesn't show you much? Insta reels started showing a lot more doggo content to me as I got a dog and the algo figured it out

Yes and that's my point - it's not the platform's fault, it's the users. Those users are going to see the same content on TikTok or Twitter, but nobody's saying ban Twitter

I see. I think the argument that some are using is that TikTok favors some sides of the debate and sometimes that is weaponized by the CCP. I don't know if it is true or not, but I saw a thread of someone trying to engage with pro-Israel content and the platform started showing content that was not pro-Israel

Do you think the CCP would be pushing more pro-Israel and anti-Israel content? fwiw I definitely see videos from both sides (one more heavily than the other - same as Twitter - which makes sense for the algo given my engagement)

That's what people are pointing out. That TikTok (maybe under the influence of the CCP) is showing more anti-Israel content: https://x.com/jmj/status/1717404573214671068

We know that the CCP blocks content that is criticizing the CCP. I'm not sure if that applies to content that is shown outside of China. But that is just one issue. There might be other issues that the CCP has their hands on
