yea idx is vscode engine under the hood + gcp powered vm. All vscode extensions work in idx

but the crazy part here is being able to develop expo/react native apps without xcode and without even a mac

Looks cool! Honestly web based IDEs might be the new wave. Hopping on and building an app without having to worry about provisioning your environment is huge for me.
