what if i donā€™t hit my goal because i get sick in a way physical exertion would be very irresponsible? no ā€œemergency cardsā€?

no emergency cards, think of it like an escrow you agree to 100%

yeah but what if i fail the goal because i can't workout because of extraordinary circumstances: do i really lose all of my points? im all for holding myself accountable but sometimes shit happens and in the case of illness the healthy decision is often to not work out for once ā€” doesnt seem right for the incentives to discourage that

if thereā€™s an opt out button for goals without losing points, then itā€™s the same experience as any other app, which you can already do :)

hence the suggestion of a limited number of "emergency cards" similar to streak freezes in duolingo feels backwards a health app would pressure me to work out in a situation where the healthy choice is not to

goals are completely an opt-in experience, no pressure to set a goal if you don't want to, but if you do set a goal on receipts you have to put up some points we're also releasing streaks soon (which are different) and will introduce streak freezes just like duolingo

sure except everybody sets workout goals while nobody plans on getting sick ā€” it's a realistic scenario that I set a goal, commit points, get sick and then lose all my points surely you can see how much that would suck?

of course, the obvious question is, is this a compelling feature if we allow anyone to just opt-out of goals without losing their points? seems like those folks might just want to set a goal on strava or apple fitness, that why there's nothing at stake in case they get injured or sick (which does happen)

i think there's more creative feature ideas here than simple unlimited, unconditional opt-outs the core feature is cool - i just think there could be some mediation for this scenario, like postponing the goal at the expense of a couple of points but not at all also: from a user retention pov, i can imagine the churn among such unlucky users losing all their points through not out of laziness or discipline lack but sickness to be quite high

yeah I agree, features have scope to expand, and might make sense to tweak with usage & feedback we wanted to build the easiest/simplest to understand experience first think having something at stake for a goal is the most compelling experience that will set receipts goals apart from the dozens of fitness apps that also have ā€œgoalsā€

for sure simple and clear is the way to start just consider this one datapoint of user feedback ;)
