who else has been following how KOSA (Kids Online Safety Act) passed the Senate? https://techcrunch.com/2024/07/30/controversial-internet-bill-kosa-passed-by-senate/ sure, it's a bill meant to protect children from viewing damaging content online; content that could inspire an eating disorder, trauma, sexual exploitation, or other harm. i'm all for this. i've personally felt damaged by unrestricted internet use as a child, and I've spoken to many children who feel attacked and vulnerable to addictive and/or toxic online content. but the bill will require internet users to verify their age and will tie your real life ID to your online identity. what? the platforms already know who's underage and who's not - their product analytics can tell pretty accurately. once again, the govt leaves no shot untaken to consolidate power, erode privacy rights, and boost surveillance.
