Good book I read long ago that is relevant now more than ever. Thesis: Gating institutions with pure meritocracy while not balancing the playing field in education perpetuates racial inequality. And almost nobody is willing to accept the sacrifices required to balance the playing field in education.

What is required to balance the playing field in education?

Federally funded public schools would be the first step, so local property values don't determine education outcomes. Even that probably wouldn't be enough though. Kids born to poor parents tend to be at a disadvantage before they enter school and the youngest years are most critical, so they would require more resources. That's not even touching on what to do about the extreme advantages for kids who go to private schools.

An internet based education institution would solve the local property values. I think the disadvantages for kids born to poor parents differ radically based on what you think the outcome should be. Are you saying those kids should have equal representation in elite spaces? I think kids born to semi-poor parents have a good shot at entering the middle class in the US.
