Yes but kinda sounds like he is reading too much into it. His lens for everything lately is that all left politicians and msm journalists are duplicitous, anti progress, anti speech, etc. The reality is much more nuanced.

Imo his reasoning here is not based on assumed bad intentions or dishonesty of the parties involved, but based on a highly developed ability to read signals of CCP officials and Chinese media. (It’s the exact same insight that allowed him to predict Covid when others thought he was “reading too much into it”)

Covid was based on his appreciation of science and statistics. He was saying the same thing a lot of epidemiologists were saying. This is conjecture (similar to the Bitcoin bet).

Could just be Xi is desperate for US allies and it’s reasonable to expect Newsom will run for president eventually. And Newsom gets more legitimacy as a national figure.

This is possible, but feels more speculative than Balaji's point to me. Bc if Xi was "desperate" for allies, it's hard to explain why he'd rebuff the courtship of many other prominent US figures:
