But where you are born and who you are born to has never mattered less than it does today. The internet is like a free, public university. You can learn almost anything and meet almost anyone.

I don't entirely agree with this... the internet is a free, public university but there is so much misinformation you still need to cultivate trustworthy information sources. You also need time to learn and opportunities to practice what you learn, and that's not always easy when you're literally living paycheck to paycheck. So yes, you're probably right overall, but both things still matter a lot.
