I recommend Kanazawa, although it is technically in Hokuriku, not Tohoku. The sushi in the area is delicious and Kenrokuen Garden is a very nice Japanese garden. There is also a modern art museum. The area is also associated with D.T. Suzuki, who introduced Zen to the world. D.T. Museum is my favorite place.
