This answer surprised me. Is it disingenuous in the sense that "extreme poverty" is a low bar that excludes many relevant problems? Or is it something else?

I just think it’s a really large timeline and oversimplified conclusion that one draws from viewing this graph - when this time period has been anything but homogeneous

Reframe: You meet an alien civilization who knows the exact state of the world in 1820 (but nothing sense) and every word in the dictionary. Your goal is to help them extrapolate the future of poverty & reproduce this graph as closely as possible. You can only use 1 word. Which word gets them the closest?

It's a fun question -- nobody would make policy decisions based on centuries of recent history compressed into a single word (that compression is too lossy). But it's a clarifying thought-experiment -- deciding which straw *best* describes the haystack, even though none are adequate.
