The first reviews of Steve McQueen's Blitz have started to come out. Most critics and viewers are calling the film old-fashioned, beautiful, and at the same time surprisingly conventional for a director known for his radical direction and choice of themes. So far, most of the published reviews have praised the incredibly beautiful shots of wartime London and the visual ingenuity, which is to be expected from a skilled director. At the same time, some believe that the film would be better watched on TV during the New Year holidays than in a large cinema, because it is too melodramatic. The main reference is the works of Charles Dickens. “Blitz” is (https://x.com/lpowell092020/status/1844082963027480721) like two parts: one is an incredibly shot and terribly tense story about survival during war, and the other is a tearful moralizing melodrama that would be better watched at home on TV.”
