Americans are just not calibrated on how far Asia has advanced. Why? I think it’s partly because there is no mass media depicting modern life in Asia besides perhaps Crazy Rich Asians. Also partly pride.

Movies won’t work for this purpose. You have to travel there or live there for a while. But if you want great movies, check out some from Edward Yang (Taiwan) and Zia Zhangke (China).

Since China eased visa restrictions last year, there have been a lot more foreign tourists. Many people have also posted travel vlogs on YouTube, and you can find many of them by searching.
