With the Discovery acquisition, sadly, HBO's future seems very uncertain. Which streaming network will pickup the mantle to produce top quality shows HBO is known for?

Based on the type of shows they have today, I'd say Apple TV+ and FX on Hulu might be good contenders.

Important to separate HBO Originals and HBO Max. HBO Originals will continue to produce great content despite Discovery’s cost cutting. HBO Max’s future is very uncertain and it will likely get fully absorbed into Discovery’s streaming unit

How is HBO Original's shielded from Discovery's cost cutting?

This is just my take but Originals has far fewer shows that are suppose to appeal to niche audiences. HBO Max was supposed to appeal to more general audiences. On average, HBO Originals produce lots of hits whereas HBO Max hasn’t.
