The BEAM VM is insanely underrated. Erlang syntax is really bad which explains it. Elixir is very pleasant to read and write and is based on the BEAM.

Very fun language, highly recommend spending a weekend jamming with it. I think rust and go are popular because pushed by major corporations (Mozilla, Google). Elixir is just as good but has no marketing $$$ behind it.
