Ironically, Fortnite itself operates a tightly controlled ecosystem:

- Only Epic can sell items and currency (V-Bucks)
- player-to-player trade isn’t allowed
- 3rd party sales are banned
- Creators can make maps—but epic controls monetization and exposure

@laz_radic Fortnite started as a game, expanded to an ecosystem, and we are moving it as quickly as we’re able into an open metaverse (as open as the web) supported by standard file formats and protocols, in which Epic and Fortnite are peers to all other developer participants.

@thomasjeans @laz_radic Simply the fact that this is not how we want to run our game. But other parts of the metaverse will support such things and we’ll welcome them, just as the Epic Games Store welcomes games using crypto.

Listen to Tim on Lex's pod. Last 1/3 of the pod Tim talks a lot about making an open, interoperable metaverse or MMO. Looks like they're pushing a functional programming language Verse to help scale it or make it work multithreaded on the server
