Not a bounce back so much as a ramp-up in 2023: ReFi & DeSci and, at risk of pushing neologisms too far, “ReSci” will be a thing, especially around biodiversity

Prediction markets. Augur blew my mind when I first learned about it but it (and the whole sector) kind of hasn’t gone anywhere :(

So encouraging to see biodiversity getting the attention it needs A US$700B/year biodiversity financing gap ought to help get some resources pointed towards protecting Nature by properly valuing it https://www.paulsoninstitute.org/conservation/financing-nature-report/

This is def a step in the right direction even though the agreement is non-binding That said, anything that helps protect 30% of Earth for biodiversity is a net positive for people and Nature https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/dec/19/cop15-deal-includes-target-to-protect-30-of-nature-on-earth-by-2030-aoe

Jim Cameron’s Avatar 2 Pandora & the planet-centric Na’vi are a deeply inspiring vision of what global eco-consciousness could look like As beautiful as Pandora is imagined to be, Earth actually is that beautiful I hope we realize that before it’s too late https://i.imgur.com/EM77dRU.jpg

We are building an open platform to quantify marine biodiversity using full metagenome analysis (ie we can see what organisms are living in an area, their relative abundance, and gain insights into their metabolic health). From that we can estimate fisheries and carbon outputs among other things

Somewhat analogous to voluntary carbon markets though I think biodiversity markets will be much larger (life produces oxygen, food, medicines, ecosystem resilience, tourism, as well as carbon) Here is a good overview on how to think about biodiversity markets https://www.naturefinance.net

There is a whole category of web3 called ReFi (regenerative finance) which is climate/nature focused. Many of those nature-based projects focus on local community empowerment as part of their project. Happy to discuss if you want
