I would suggest that while human microbiome offer an interesting avenue so do ecosystem microbiomes. Microbes really run the global ecology and services that could help both describe “healthy” ecological microbiomes as well as ai-driven tools that could help forecast potential ecosystem adaptation/resilience issues as well as propose microbial consortia as potential “immunizations” or remediation solutions offer sizable opportunities in the ecological monitoring($10b/year) and bioremediation ($15b) markets. One particular area that might be of interest from a VC POV is the concept of microbial “ecological firewalls” which can be deployed to help protect areas and/or clean up pollution. Here is a brief summary of ecological firewalls https://www.perplexity.ai/search/explain-ecological-firewalls-a-Ztzn7frIT3iMBZbOsYPd8g

Maybe you all thought of this already, but insurance linked securities offer an interesting way for insurers to syndicate risk. Best known examples of current climate-related ILS are catastrophe bonds that insure against things like hurricanes and wildfires. These bonds offer good returns, and perhaps more importantly, low correlation to other assets. Catastrophe bond market is growing and currently issuing about $15B/year in new bonds. Here is a 2 min overview of cat bonds from John Seo of Fermat Capital, a hedge fund Bloomberg highlighted as one of the the best performers in 2023. https://youtu.be/VBahUxQSIqc?si=PHBD2vH6o7kk10yr

Tokenize the excess energy that panels generate for resale? That could be made more efficient than how selling back to the grid works now. Would be very interesting to think about linking tokens to helping to fund battery storage so the excess solar could be sold back to help smooth demand and mitigate curtailment. Currently, curtailed solar power could power about 350k homes annually

Not a bounce back so much as a ramp-up in 2023: ReFi & DeSci and, at risk of pushing neologisms too far, “ReSci” will be a thing, especially around biodiversity

Prediction markets. Augur blew my mind when I first learned about it but it (and the whole sector) kind of hasn’t gone anywhere :(

So encouraging to see biodiversity getting the attention it needs A US$700B/year biodiversity financing gap ought to help get some resources pointed towards protecting Nature by properly valuing it https://www.paulsoninstitute.org/conservation/financing-nature-report/
