Call your friends regularly. Chat with them. Check up on their health and well being. Maintain your relationships. Because one day you will need them. Not may. Will. And there is nothing as annoying to someone as not hearing from you for a long time, only for you to suddenly call them and ask them for money, favours or help. It portrays you as a parasite, even if you are not really one. No matter the emergency you are facing, if they were not your priority when things were going well for you, why should you be their concern when things are not in a good state? And trying to hide the reason for your call by starting a fake conversation before you 'suddenly' remember the favour is even worse. They can spot that fake conversation even before you start it. So, avoid that and maintain the relationship so you can retain it.
