Skype’s upcoming deprecation on May 5 hits deep. It’s not just an app—it’s a relic of a different internet. Having lived in Asia for years, Skype was a lifeline for keeping US accounts open. That random US number? It was a necessity. And somehow, a decade later, I still use it for my 1:1 Japanese lessons. Skype was like family. I used it to call my grandparents. I still have their chat open, untouched since my last call with my grandfather—just days before he passed during COVID. When Skype disappears, I don’t think that chat will survive the migration to Teams. Another digital farewell.
