Burkina Faso is a state in West Africa, until August 4, 1984 called the Republic of Haute-Volta (French: République de Haute-Volta). According to the country's Constitution (Article 31), “Faso is a republican form of state”, meaning that “Faso” is synonymous with “Republic”.
