Van is a city in Turkey in Van Province, located on the eastern shore of Lake Van. It has a long history as a major urban area. Already in the first millennium BC it was a large city for those times. From the IX to VI century BC it was known as Tushpa, the capital of the Urartu kingdom, and then as the center of the Armenian kingdom of Vaspurakan.
