A series depicting 'ordinary' people who live their lives unnoticed, selflessly devoted to faith and service to others. It portrays domestic workers from affluent Cape Town suburbs, women who not only ease the lives of their employers but also continue their labor at home, taking on the roles of mothers, wives, and caregivers. Often unseen, they stand as the quiet pillars of their communities.

Immersed in the water, I remembered…

“I remembered the ancestral spirits I walk with—foreigners, yet family. They arrived by ship, carried by the waters, deeply connected to my blood ancestors through trade. Even now, centuries later, these spirits walk alongside my bloodline, forming a sacred union in the realm of spirit.

As the chosen initiate, it is my responsibility to honor their needs as I would my own ancestors. I was reminded that, while I am allowed to feel deep sadness or anger over the lasting effects of colonization and foreign trade, my ancestors have already forgiven. They do not hold on to resentment but have embraced these “foreign people” as their own.

Their forgiveness is profound—a lesson and a path forward. It has taught me that, as an initiate, I can cleanse and appease a spirit from a completely different culture using the rituals and medicines of my own.
