How to enhance bone density and prevent osteoporotic fractures? Studies show that weight-bearing exercises are more effective than supplements. These exercises, which transmit forces through the skeleton and stimulate bone growth, include high-impact activities such as jumping, aerobics, and running. In contrast, low-intensity exercises like walking and swimming appear to have insufficient impact on bone density in the spine, wrist, or overall skeleton, but it has been shown to significantly improve hip bone density when they are done in sufficient frequency and intensity. Note that weight-bearing impact exercises may not be advisable for patients with severe osteoporosis or a recent history of fractures.
