Birkenstock is not a work of art, a German court has ruled. The world-famous sandals went to court to stop their competitors from selling shoes that were too similar to their brand, but their appeal was rejected because "the design cannot be protected by copyright." Birkenstock, by the way, has been around since 1774. And in 2021, they sold a stake to a company associated with the LVMH holding.
