remember: it's never as good as it seems and it's never as bad as it seems

This is priceless advice — a mentor of mine told me this after a speech I made. I was down on myself and told him I blew it. 

The way he phrased it was: “Well, Evan, it probably wasn’t as bad as you think. Of course, it probably wasn’t as good as you think either!”

He also said “it’s good to have perspective, but don’t ever talk down to yourself—other people will do that for you, but there won’t always be someone to encourage you when you need it.” 

That was the bonus lesson: while hate is usually loud, love is often quiet, so it’s important for us to give it life at every opportunity.
