As a web3 startup founder and someone who works with startups every day on their marketing strategy I think that all founders need to understand their GTM and marketing plans before they hire anyone else. So I agree in a sense but also it’s misleading to think that this meant that Coinbase did no marketing for 6yrs

Marketing is everything a company says about themselves: brand strategy - logo, website, tagline; who is it for?, creating a narrative that audience resonates with, understanding your target audience and their motivations, consistency in this message across channels that your audience frequents is what builds momentum.
