At this point I just black box the pairing curves and think about the algebraic relations they satisfy.

yes, thats my approach as well. this post does a good job at explaining all the different parts in an easy language. when I look at arkworks implementation, it has like F_r, F_q, F_q^2, F_q^6 and F_q^12 defined and i didn’t know which is used where. after reading the post it makes a lot of sense
