Did you guys know that universal basic income passed the house and the senate in the 70s, but the provision was ultimately removed before Nixon signed it.

It seems an interest group in favor of the welfare programs lobbied hard against it which is why it was removed.

Apparently Moynihan (very influential senator of the time) wrote a book about the political machinations behind the scenes. He was for the reverse income tax.
