What is an Applicant Tracking System (ATS)? Does it replace the recruiter and automatically reject applications? šŸ‘€ šŸ‘‡

Basically, ATS is a super important tool for recruiters to handle the whole hiring gig, from posting jobs to sealing the deal with candidates. Knowing how it works and busting any myths can help job seekers rock the application process. What questions/concerns do you have about applying for jobs? šŸ‘‡

1. Does it help to say a keyword many times or is 1x enough? 2. In most ATS systems, if they select for data analytics, would data analysis pass through? 3. Do companies look at only the most recent resume from an applicant or also ones previously submitted? 4. Is it bad to apply to multiple roles? 5. Best date format

Great questions! 1. One time is enough 2. I'm not sure what you mean? 3. They would most likely look at the previous ones also. That's because we want to know why the applicant didn't pass before 4. If the roles are very different, yes. It makes it seem that the candidate doesn't know what they want. 5. mm.yyyy

Thanks for the response! 1 & 5 šŸ‘ 3 & 4 good to know 2.) When the hiring person is using ATS to initially narrow down top applicants, if they, for example, selected a keyword/skill requirement of ā€œdata analyticsā€, would my resume with only the word ā€œdata analysisā€ get through or does it need to be exact?

Yes, It would have to be very exact phrases. However, I don't know any team that actually narrows it down like that, if they do that would be extremely counter productive. "Keywords" have very little impact on reflecting actual skills/experience. I don't think I would want to work for a team that does this šŸ˜…

How do they generally narrow it down then?

Most of the time you will review every single application. Sometimes they include knockout questions. Those ask about essential criteria e.g. are you able to relocate to London.

Interesting. I didnā€™t realize that even if there are tons of applicants.

Yeah, it's a lot of work but in cases like that you have more than one person reviewing, so it's not too bad :)

That makes sense. Really didnā€™t realize how it all worked. The guides donā€™t portray this angle of it at all imo

I agree. I feel that most recruitment/hiring advice out there is too theoretical.
