I recently started on Substack and have had mixed feelings. I'm not really that invested in it but also don't want to have to go through the hassle of moving.

+1. They started by building on top of SMTP, then gradually introduced more and more closed layers (eg Chat, Notes) and network effects (eg author recommendations). The vision of Paragraph is that these layers should be open, composable & owned by creators/readers wherever possible

isn't a lot of this just coming bc their biz model is tough and funding environment is tough(er)? i think they need new features like this/more lock-in,etc. to (at the very least) be able to tell a compelling fundraising story?
