Scroll recently launched the mainnet of its zkEVM chain; however, because it needs to closely mirror the classic EVM on Ethereum, it’s unlikely that we’ll witness innovative design concepts and experiments, such as privacy features, at the execution level there. What are your thoughts on these limitations?

I don't think we need privacy at the execution layer! Totally okay to build it as a layer on top.

I totally understand the suggestion to build such properties on a higher layer, but many zkEVM L2 teams feel (socially) compelled to limit their zkEVM. They avoid advancing their EVM forks to support privacy features to ensure their zkEVMs remain “EVM-equivalent”. Do you encourage them to evolve their zkEVMs,?

There’s already a clear spectrum developing between: 1. “Pure” EVM 2. EVM+ 3. New and unique VMs I’m glad we have Scroll online, but it’s now starting to feel demand here has been met and I’m excited by what’s happening at the other end of the spectrum.

I think “Classic EVM” might be the more apt term than “Pure EVM”, but yes, lots of good work being done by other VMs in the Ethereum ecosystem.

Yeah I like that better. Keeping one eye on theses discussions at devconnect, and the bigger question is if we can or should decouple this to speed up innovation. IMO rollups should be leading, rather than following here. But it could get very messy, very quickly. https://github.com/Ethereum/pm/issues/885
