What would you be doing if you weren't doing what you're doing?

When ethereum launched it felt like the most important technology since the world wide web and I dropped out of grad school. The only other technology that felt equally impactful was fusion energy. If I wasn't doing this I'd probably still be working at LANL

That's fascinating, thanks for the thoughtful response. Now, for the hard question: Your answer got me thinking about reinvention. If you were looking to pivot mid-career while balancing stability and creative fulfillment, how would you approach it? For context: I spent several of my formative years in the US military, and when it came time to decide whether to re-enlist, I read Robert Frost’s 'The Road Not Taken' one too many times and chose a different path. I cut ties with the government, moved alone to Eastern Europe, and spent a decade in finance. While there, I met my wife, had a house built (that I can no longer visit due to geopolitical reasons), and our son was born. When he was about a year old, I took a corporate role in the Middle East for three years. Then, nearly a decade ago, I returned to the US as that job wound down. (1/2)

Along the way, I've picked up several languages; I'm still fluent in one. Now, I work in research, writing and analysis for a small firm. It’s stable, pays the bills, and gives me freedom on evenings and weekends, but it’s no longer challenging. On the artistic side, I’ve spent the past few years developing a niche in AI-generated abstract glass aesthetics. But I stay anon online because my firm’s work is politically sensitive, making it difficult to publicly merge my professional and creative identities. If you were in my shoes – mid-40s, family responsibilities, needing stability but craving something more engaging – how would you approach seeking a career that’s more creatively fulfilling?
