There were no stores or even houses around. 
Of course I know it's a beckoning cat, but what does it exist for?

Quite big.

Ryo was a unit of currency used in Japan during the Edo period.
It was made of gold and often used in the form of a Koban coin.
It is difficult to convert in terms of current value, but it is thought to be between $1000 and $2000.

Originally, the meaning of a beckoning cat differs depending on the hand that raises it.
A cat with its right hand raised invites money, and a cat with its left hand raised invites people.
I think cats in stores usually have their left hand raised.
But this big beckoning cat has the wrong hand to raise because it is trying to invite money by raising its left hand.

And since this is a mountain pass with no stores or houses, I don't know why it is here either.
