Mahatma Gandhi once said, “First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.” It’s more of a general observation about how new ideas—technological or otherwise—are often received with skepticism or resistance before gaining acceptance. Over time, people have adapted it to describe the arc of disruptive innovations, like how early critics dismissed electricity or the internet before they became unstoppable. During my opening keynote address The Legacy Conference, I told the aspiring entrepreneurs that the creative arts are no stranger to such resistance. From the printing press to photography, digital art, generative art, and now generative AI, we’re seeing the clash play out again. As I said in my talk, look to the 180—it’s often where the opportunities hide. Human nature is a funny thing! 😂
