I really like this, from Chesterton. Thanks @dylanoa4 Reminds me of an adjacent but similar thought: "the world does in fact owe you a living, BUT it is incumbent upon you to be your own collector"

Alas. I more often than not try to keep references to these kinds of chestnuts, but this one I can’t recall….but it has lived actively in my mind for a good long while. GPT cannot pin it down either, but suggested it aligned with Ralph Waldo Emerson’s thinking, so perhaps I picked it up while on an Emerson kick at one point.
