if you have a free app in crypto and you say you have N users, then it means nothing and it looks weak. 1) only active users matter 2) thereโ€˜s an incredible amount of bots and your free users could be 99% bots. Just heard an app that โ€žhas 8 million usersโ€œ. The top content on app has 12k lifetime views ๐Ÿซ

Genuinely curious how you would discount followers based on free sign ups on Twitter vs. paid sign ups on Farcaster?

Right, but so then you're back to saying the entire industry needs a new metric. Not happening.

agreed - end users probably won't switch, but inside professional circles using metrics that are not narrowed to active nor likely human accounts feels like setting the bar pretty low as a space.

But metrics are inherently relative. People compare audience size across platforms. Pushing boulder up hill for a sub-scale platform to try to redefine the metric. Hell, Meta has tried to change the metric (see recent 10-Ks) and industry still uses MAU and DAU. You don't get points for purity.

Said another way, Farcaster data is open, so of course people will be more critical of the user base. But then impossible to compete with web2 which is not open and subject to such scrutiny. No one has time for education / nuance. So use the industry metric, understand flaws, make forward progress on product.
