The previous "widgets.notion.site" implementation was pure SEO garbage. Remember, subdomains are like partitions of a whole, the domain. Having a million separate microsites on one domain muddles their relevance and authority. Would not build anythinng worth driving indexing/public traffic with that approach.
In terms of the new custom domain solution:
(1) Yes, custom domain is great. However, I worry that it lacks the fine tuning needed to really dial in a site's technical SEO config, eg. robots.txt, redirect rules (v important), DNS configs, ssl certificates, sitemaps etc.
(2) The only "SEO" reference I see on the Sites product landing page, is for meta titles and descriptions, the absolute BARE minimum to expect. Pretty weak imo, but will explore more.
First glance, I'd say this is a kneecapped CMS / self-hosted solution, there are better options for similar costs like WIX and even Wordpress (with Joost SEO plugin), that will have way superior optimization capabilities. 2 replies
