interesting take. not sure its the winning ingredient that will make or break your startup. I hire based on the needs and the capabilities of the person to own it and fit culturally. I wouldn't work for a founder who is this narrow minded TBH.

Also if they tell you they are interviewing at other companies in general, probably not the best option. Sink or swim.

I’ve never had a choice in the matter… My primary (and only) criteria for where I work is based on whether or not a given company will hire me… I’d love if all the talented people here started only applying for S&P 400 companies leading to the Startup Innovation Brain Drain Panic of 2025.

Mmm depends on their history. If they have worked at startups before they know what’s up. If they are big-company hopping then yeah.

I had a startup CTO insist on Google employees about 12 years. Couldn’t seem to get him to understand this, and had no personal anecdotes of it failing. He did me a solid there.

a great question to find people for long-term collaboration: "do you see yourself working on that product for this company for next five years?" this works well for applicants as well to filter companies when they are looking for their next gig

or they're interviewing at the large company to make peace with their parents and they're interviewing at an early startup b/c they believe in themselves. what do I know? i played that playbook for a decade.

Spicy take but strong disagree. The why matters a lot here! "I'm exploring opportunities at small companies because I love to create things that have never been built before, but I'm also exploring roles in the premium tier of large companies so that I'll have a cohort of peers to help me polish my craft."

Amen. Startup DNA and huge company DNA are not the same. At all.
