Remember when people thought buying Twitter for $44B was overpaying and would certainly lead to financial ruin?

Twitter is worth far less than $44b today https://finance.yahoo.com/news/x-worth-72-less-44-174932002.html Now if you're saying he bought it exclusively to get influence in Trump admin so he can be an oligarch in that admin, then yeah, probably worth it [for him].

independent company - he could (can) found a company like this regardless of purchasing twitter. for example its current models aren't even trained on Twitter data. So irrelevant to our conversation :)

He gave X / Twitter shareholders 25% of the company. So quite relevant.

OK so shareholders made a rational decision but Musk didn't? Still irrelevant if we're speaking about Musk. He could've founded xAI regardless, without giving those shares and enjoy the $50b valuation only for himself. Unless, again, you think that his actions within Twitter helped him to become a more influential oligarch and that's why xAI got that evaluation.
