These changes are not launching yet. It will be a couple weeks. There will also be a bunch of communication to channel owners.

Why not just let the channel owner decide if they want to make it invite-only? 

What is the reasoning for making it default invite-only for everyone?

Channels aren't hashtags or topics. They are spaces that a specific individual gets to curate.

Then shouldn’t they have the option to toggle off invite only?

lets say i am a channel owner, and i would like to curate my channel to be an open forum where anyone is welcome - what do you say to me?
