wish there was a way to link your fc account to github or something so i could follow real people who are just joining. 

it all seems like a stream of bots now — very hard to distinguish who’s not a spammer, farmer, or username flipper.

I would ask for multiple ways to prove non-botness. GitHub account ownership, especially with the 2FA requirement, is helpful, but not everyone worth following is a programmer or wants a GitHub account.

It's a good start, but other identities (Bandcamp? DeviantArt?) would help diversify the FC crowd.
