Back in the day there was a yearly Google AI challenge (although I think it ran only for three years).

Planet Wars was the second year (I think) and someone got pretty far with a bot using Genetic Programming.

The winning bot was of course written in Common Lisp.

The blog posts seem to be gone 🙁

Now the AI gets to play more video games than me too??
