why mute without unfollowing? if you want to mute someone, why would you still want to follow them?

Normalize unfollowing people if they are uninteresting to you. :)

Agree. 

Problem is, it’s a status thing. 

‘Omg X person follows me! They love me!’ 

And 

‘Omg Y person unfollowed me, they hate me now!’

And when your a big account, who knows what will trigger someone to try ruin your life for a perceived insult.
