Anxious drives towards both "taste" and "excellence" are often displaced impulses of care that cannot find an outlet. When you don't know what to care about (boss mode: what/whom to love), you end up worrying about "taste" and "excellence."

They're not irrelevant, but are ideally servants to the caring/loving impulse. Not masters, and definitely not replacements. And you can actually do without either. Raw, unpolished caring without the refinements of taste/excellence is often more than enough.
