the older i get, the less the vc-funded startup path makes any sense my guess is very few founders actually want to build a a BILLION dollar company, they just want to build a cool business and earn some status

On the other hand, it enables a *lot* of people starting out on their own to make the bet on themselves full time Few people have the savings to go full time on their own company without grinding away for months part time (not ideal)
