Mahalo, Michael… it was a crazy collision. I could see it coming, and it was fascinating to watch the surfer leap off the board to try to avoid the worst of the impact. 

(Though, I almost wonder if diving under might have been a better option.)

Such a fast paced sport, hard to know what would’ve been the best option. Especially in big surf

Also, shallow reef in this spot, so under might not have been a great choice either.
