College athletics was great as a complement to education. But it has become too big a focus of most universities. Evidenced by the posh practice facilities, booster clubs and many states highest paid employees being university coaches. 

Athletes should be allowed to go pro out of high school and make money and thrive. College adds an unnecessary barrier which they make nothing out of it get career ending injuries. European club system for tennis and football is a good example of this.

And now they dangle a little bit of ‘let’s pay the athletes’ to justify owning the athletes further. There are words for this type of employment and binding contracts that can’t be used here.
