Simple question about ZK rollups - when one is put on the main chain, who is the adversary and what action does the rollup defend against?

What do you mean? Are you asking about how the zk-rollup data gets posted on L1?

I understand how, I’m trying to work out why?

Validity proofs prove valid execution of state transitions. Rollups make the state transitions of a chain canonically ordered via the ordering of the layer the transitions are rolled up to.

This I believe I understand (but find myself wrong often). But my question is really what is the threat model - if the l2 is its own blockchain and state authority, then what protection do I get against what attack threat by having a rollup on mainnet?
