How does one tax a movie…like raise ticket prices at movies, charge to be shown in the US? And what about movies that just go straight to streaming? I mean isn’t that kinda like trying to tax the internet at some point?

Not a tax expert, but working with a few. Movies are like any other product. They are sold by overseas production companies to U.S. distributors who import them, incl. Netflix. That transaction can get tariffed just like any other. Things get slightly murkier for U.S. production companies that make or buy part of the filming abroad. In this case I think the same materiality test applies at the border as every other product — is most of the value being added domestically or overseas, and the overseas component gets tariffed accordingly. Not saying it’s a smart decision, just that it’s in principle enforceable

Oh yeah that’s true, forget that technically there’s a whole distributorship process. Feels like we’re getting to the I don’t like your ideology so I’m going to tax/tariff/discourage it however I can. But like you said it’s super murky, like is it ok for US production companies to film overseas, the company just has to be incorporated in America? As usual such a complex issue boiled down to just a oh let’s do it statement haha.

I wonder how much productivity and money is lost for companies just trying to figure out how to comply with all of this new stuff. The multiple different auto tarrifs with phasing rebates seems like a literal nightmare to deal with.

Yeah, we all love how much companies love uncertainty. It will be fascinating to see the studies and figures when all this is done. I have to imagine there’s so much chaos that it’s not being collected correctly either to some degree. Like is there any one unifying source of truth that has what everything is actually legally, not what just has been said

Haha yeah there was reporting a week or 2 after liberation day that customs wasn’t even collecting the new tariff rates yet because their systems weren’t ready for it. Not sure how accurate that reporting is. As for a unifying source, lol I don’t think so. Because it changes on a dime every time he tweets. I cannot believe the GOP has been this neutered. It’s going to cost them big time.
