In middle school, I read “Moby-Dick; or, The Whale” (and greatly enjoyed it); shortly afterward, I started writing semicolons at every opportunity I had.

This practice of mine has waned since—perhaps we are due for an old-fashioned, 19th century–style punctuation renaissance!
